Ol Moran Maternity Clinic and Health centre

The Maternity Clinic and Health Centre donated by GMF to the Ol Moran community has been completed and furnished. The water system has been linked to the village borehole with help and labour from Ol Moran Catholic Mission. An external laundry has been constructed, plumbing completed and a separate room for storage of solar batteries for the solar system.

The Clinic is a 10 bed facility with modern medical equipment by Barfield Hospital Suppliers, and has been built at the request of the Ol Moran Community, it is the only such health centre in the region.

The clinic combines a traditional Ministry of Health approved design with fantasy and creativity.

There is scientific evidence that endorphins (serotonin, adrenaline and noradrenalin) are substances linked to positive energy, euphoria and good mood and contribute to the lifting of depression; recent studies have demonstrated that the production of endorphins is stimulated by the senses, and colours, soothing music, perfumes, pleasant flavours, gentle touch are considered healing.

In this spirit, the internal walls of the clinic have been decorated with happy murals of nature, trees, birds, and African animals with predominance of soothing blues and greens. The ceiling of the delivery room is a starry night sky while the operating theatre's is a blue sky with soft white clouds. Mobiles of colourful birds will be suspended over the beds and cribs, while soft music and nature sounds will be played for the patients. Jennifer Letirok, a young pharmacist from the Samburu tribal community has been employed by the GMF as a store keeper and pharmacist in charge, and we have advertised for a grounds supervisor, while the Government will provide specialised medical personnel.

A hundred trees have been planted in the grounds in June on World Environment Day.

In early August the solar system was fixed and all was ready for the arrival of Dr. Bill Chester and his team of specialist doctors and nurses from the USA who, in addition to the solar system, donated a substantial amount of specialised medical equipment and medicines to the clinic through the Paul Chester Children Hope Foundation.. The value of their donation exceeds $400.000. On 20th August the Clinic was opened with a festive occasion to which participated the entire Ol Moran Village and local authorities, which was filmed by national TV. Girls from Deep Sea Nairobi slums who were at the time hosted at our Centre, together with the Italian team of Africa Si and psyco therapist Alessandra Tiengo danced for the guests. Additional Donors are: the Royal Nederlands Embassy (funds to complete and furnish the maternity), The Ol Moran Catholic Mission( metal windows and doors)The British Army (medicine and blankets). We thank them deeply on behalf of the entire community.
